Tonight

Tonight is the big night for Bert and Nasi. Tonight is also the name of the show the duo is performing — just for tonight. But then what does it mean for Tonight if they
are also performing it tomorrow night?
With this new creation, Bertrand Lesca and Nasi Voutsas take us on a journey through time and absurdity, asking: can you perform a show called Tonight… every
night?

This two-voiced monologue, written four-handedly, turns the encounter between artist and spectator into a unique moment that, somehow, repeats itself night after
night. This new work by the performer duo Bertrand Lesca and Nasi Voutsas – also known as Bert and Nasi – marks a turning point in their artistic journey. It is the
first time Bert and Nasi have written a text together: a “monologue” they share and perform as a duo.

The project represents a natural evolution following their previous creations THE END and THE BEGINNING (premiered in 2019 and 2023 respectively), as well as their collaboration with director Tim Etchells on L’ADDITION, presented at the 2023 Avignon Festival, and at Here & Now showcase 2024, in Edinburgh.

Like these earlier works, Tonight is an absurd reflection on the present moment and the theatrical act itself, performed live by the two actors before the audience.
However, instead of relying on movement and dance as their main scenic tools to express the absurdity of life and performance, the duo chose to write a text — a
piece of automatic writing with surrealist undertones, which they recite together. In doing so, they open a new pathway towards simplicity and abstraction, sustained
by the closeness of the audience and by this shared voice, written four-handedly.

Throughout the performance, Bert and Nasi use and repeat the phrase “tonight,” deliberately blurring the line between the show Tonight and the present moment
— this encounter with the audience that renews itself each evening. It’s a playful way of evoking the act of being here, now, in front of an audience, but also a poetic
expression of the countless possibilities that unfold each time we attend a performance (good or bad), and at the start of any evening. The lightness and comic tone of the text highlight both the position of the spectator — watching — and that of the performers — repeating the same thing night after night, though never quite in the same way. It’s a subtle invitation to upend the expectations of a “normal” evening, as well as the conventions of theatre itself.

Awards and festivals

In 2020, Bert and Nasi received the Forced Entertainment Award in memory of Huw Chadbourn, which celebrates the work of contemporary artists reinventing theatre and performance in new ways and for new audiences.
